Intent

At Whitley Memorial, we believe that mathematics is a vital foundation for life. Our aim is to develop confident, fluent and independent mathematicians who are resilient and equipped to solve problems and reason logically.

Our mathematics curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that learning is both progressive and inclusive. Teaching builds systematically on prior knowledge while addressing gaps in understanding to secure strong foundations for all pupils. Key number concepts and arithmetic fluency are given particular emphasis, supporting children to apply their learning across the wider curriculum with accuracy and confidence.

We are committed to ensuring that every pupil, regardless of background or starting point, is supported to achieve success in mathemathics. Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of individuals and groups, with a clear focus on promoting high expectations and providing the right level of challenge for all learners.

Teachers use consistent approaches to modelling, questioning and assessment to support pupils in developing a deep, conceptual understanding of mathematics. Daily arithmetic sessions, alongside well-structured lessons, help to embed core skills and promote long-term retention of knowledge.

Through engaging, high-quality teaching and ongoing professional development for staff, we aim to foster a culture of mathematical thinking and enthusiasm. Our vision is that every child leaves Whitley Memorial with the confidence and capability to use mathematics effectively in their lives.
