Bedlington Whitley Memorial

English in our school

At Whitley Memorial Church of England Primary School, our English curriculum is built around high-quality, carefully chosen texts that inspire a love of reading while providing meaningful contexts for writing. From Nursery to Year 6, children study a diverse range of classic and contemporary fiction, non-fiction and poetry, with each year group working towards common writing outcomes that build progressively on prior learning. Writing is closely linked to rich literature, ensuring children develop the vocabulary, knowledge and confidence to write for a range of purposes and audiences. Alongside this, our carefully sequenced reading curriculum exposes pupils to ambitious language, diverse voices and important themes, helping them become fluent, thoughtful and enthusiastic readers. By revisiting genres, skills and high-quality texts throughout their primary journey, we ensure every child has the opportunity to develop as a confident communicator and, in the spirit of our school vision, to 'let their light shine'.
